I tried rc7 too and it gave me a system lock with kms immediately. So I cannot say anything about the suspend problem here, sorry :(
I do not understand what subchee means about the radeon as a loadable module. It alway is, isn't it? It is build with the kernel together with hundreds of other ones... As far as the atheros module is concerned, I use the madwifi, which is supposed to be build outside of the kernel compilation. And every time for a custom kernel I have to compile it separately from source, not a big deal though.
