Ok, some very limited progress: The latest updates at least now let me get to the rescue prompt and start a safe mode X without having to uninstall fglrx. But fglrx is obviously not working properly. This is after I blew everything away and started fresh from a Beta 2 CD, so the there truly is a problem with fglrx and my GPU, there was no configuration left behind. The desktop came up fine until I installed the restricted drivers, then everything goes to hell.
