Seems like disabling the visual effects (in the Appearance Preferences window) makes the system stable so it's most likely that the issue relates to how Ubuntu utilises 3D facilities of the core.
Could anyone please confirm that: 1) The issue only appear with ASUS motherboards and 2) Disabling the visual effects frees the system from the freezes?
