The reported problem has not been resolved in the current (9.10) version
of Ubuntu.
I have also tested this in Ubuntu 10.04 and the issue has gotten worse.
When plugging in the VGA cable before opening the lid, X tries to
automatically switch the monitor and ends up looping between LVDS and
VGA without ending.
I am requesting that lid action (open/close) does not change screen
configuration. The only method a user should be allowed to change screen
configuration is manually (xrandr, Display Properties, Fn-8 monitor-
related function key).
