I am having a similar problem. mouseemu was never installed onto my system. I was able to get the keyboard working by reinstalling VMware- Tools onto my image. But it only works after login. I still have to use the onscreen keyboard to log in from the login screen. Since this is a vmware image I set autologin but it only bypasses the problem not fix it.
