I've just done a quick test on maverick, and it seems to be fixed.
$ apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-input-evdev
xserver-xorg-input-evdev:

left handed usb mouse has to be reset to left-handed in mouse-settings after
inserting the usb-mouse
