I get the same behavior trying to boot to Lucid 64-bit live CD on my HP
EliteBook 8440p with nvidia NVS 3100M graphics. I was able to use the
"nomodeset" to install and on first boot until I installed the
proprietary nvidia drivers. The other problems I run into are:

-I cannot adjust the brightness - it is all or nothing. (Bug #562005)
-Whenever I close my screen without suspending (just turns the screen off), I 
have to switch to a VT and back to turn my screen back on. (probably related to 
the previous problem)

I suspect my remaining problems can be attributed to problems with the
proprietary drivers.
