Is this still an issue for you on Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx"? If it is and you want more 3D performance you can install the Linux version of the proprietary drivers, which have improved greatly over the last 12 months or so. I think they are still supporting this chipset. Improved 2D performance in the proprietary driver should arrive in another month or two thanks to the implementation of Direct2D.
