OK, well here's what I did (don't know if it's good form or not...)

1. logged in as usual
2. press Ctrl+alt+F1
3. logged in
4. $ sudo pkill gdm
5. $ /usr/bin/Xorg -configure [gave some error message]
6. $ sudo /usr/bin/Xorg -configure [saved xorg.conf.new into my home directory]

I then looked at the conf file, it already had "geode" as the driver.
(see attached)

I copied it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf but I had the same issue (defaults to
1024x768 and no option for 1024x600)

** Attachment added: "twinhead xorg.conf.new generated through -configure
command"
