Two more things: - There is a kernel patch that should fix some GPU errors on i945 and i915 at http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/intel-gfx/2010-May/006982.html . Since you are compiling the kernel yourself, you may want to try that. - Adding the kernel option drm.debug=0x02 should make the drm driver more verbose about what is going wrong in dmesg output.
