I have been experiencing this as well. I just (finally) got ubuntu up on my new x201 yesterday (was running into the KMS error, before).
Yesterday I used the laptop all day without a problem, I was working from home so it was just the laptop. Today I brought it into the office and have experienced 2 or 3 freezes today. The differences include: - external display - external keyboard - external mouse I just turned off the visual effects (under appearance) which I guess turns off compiz. I'll report back if that helps.
