This bug can probably be closed. I ran into some similar problems with the release of 195.36.24-0ubuntu1~10.04. I solved the problem by purging all nvidia packages. Then removing the directories:
/usr/lib32/nvidia-current /usr/lib/nvidia-current which were not empty meaning somehow cruft had accumulated in them. I then reinstalled nvidia-current and everything seemed to work.
