I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell D600 and I can't seem to locate the psmouse.conf file in modprobe.d in order to edit it and attempt to fix this issue per TIm's suggestion. Do I need to create a psmouse.conf file? (My issue is the left mouse button for the track pad and/or stick pointer will click down, but it doesn't register or do anything until I move the mouse. Such that I always need to left-click and move the cursor to make the left click register.)
