I neglected to mention that I feel this is probably radeon specific, as I've seen it happen repeatedly on 3 different radeon laptops. In several circumstances this resulted in loss of data, one of which was extremely unfortunate timing. It has happened with and without compiz enabled. I do not have a reproducer.
