Not sure if this makes a difference, but X is starting on tty7 on this machine and one of the others that has had the problem, whereas on my maverick machine it starts on tty9. $ sudo lsof -p 926|grep tty Xorg 926 root 5u CHR 4,7 0t0 913 /dev/tty7
