You have been subscribed to a public bug:
nouveau chooses the resolution with the highest pixel count as a
default, which is not necessarily the native resolution. On a computer
with an LCD screen having a 1440x900 native resolution (which is 1296000
pixels, being the second highest pixel count resolution), nouveau picks
1280x1024 instead, which has a pixel count of 1310720.
