I'm running Ubuntu 10.4 (Lucid) and I had this problem with getting a black screen when switching users also.
Following Igor's advice fixed it for me. The steps I took were: 1. Download the nvidia-96 96.43.18-0ubuntu1 package from http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/nvidia-96 2. Install the package with the following command: sudo dpkg -i nvidia-96_96.43.18-0ubuntu1_i386.deb 3. Restart the computer Since then everything works perfectly.
