Compiling TVTime from source (which is a chore in itself) has resolved
the issue for me. No more keyboard mapping events reported by xev and no
more sticky Shift_L issues. I don't know if that resolves all your
reported issues, but it seems to have resolved mine.

If compiling from source have a look at dependencies at
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/tvtime (or whatever release you're
using). For me, I missed libxv1 so while it would compile it would
report no X support (and not run).
