After updating via update manager yesterday (official 10.10 release date), I removed all Compiz components via Synaptic and reinstalled them. Compiz works again!! I have no idea why that worked or why it didn't work when I removed Compiz the first time - but it's worth a try. But make no mistake, support for Intel video driver has been pretty spotty since Lucid was released.
