May be a duplicate of bug #588940. Changing from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to that GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset" in file /etc/default/grub and issuing the command update-grub solved the problem for me.
