I am experiencing the same problem in a fresh amd64 installation of lucid. The bug persists after upgrading to maverick. I would paste the strace of gnome-session and X applications but is the same as the ones pasted above (apps get stuck reading from /tmp/.ICE-unix and gnome- session gets stuck in a call to poll)
Adding my local host-name to /etc/hosts did not help. Neither did disabling ipv6.
