It turns out that my earlier assumptions were wrong and this is entirely down to EXA vs UXA. Using EXA in either jaunty's 2.6.3 or a 2.6.99 snapshot performs poorly, and switching either to UXA brings back Intrepid smoothness (and other bugs such as occasional rendering artifacts, hangs and segfaults on resume).
