Audio is generally outside the scope of X.org; I know there seems to be some overlap in this case since the same cable transmits both video and audio, but as I understand it, video and audio are split out at the kernel level and the latter is directed off to the audio system, so it's not something we deal with in ubuntu-x. Since it sounds like you were able to resolve it by using a newer kernel, that suggests there is a kernel patch upstream needed to make your system work. So you should report this to the kernel team. If you are able to identify the specific patch(es) needed either by talking with a developer or doing git bisection, you can request the patch(es) added to the kernel. Probably too late to get into the lucid release but maybe it'll qualify for an SRU. Otherwise, the newer kernel bits will be present in the 10.04.1 kernel update presumably.
