I was able to boot into text mode by editing the Grub menu entry, and
this was stable. Unfortunately this isn't a "spare" machine for me - I
need it to work reliably. For the time being I am downgrading to 9.10.
But I'll be changing back when stability has been fixed.

I also experienced this. However, a newer version of the kernel was
installed too. When I chose the previous kernel through grub, it
booted up properly, though i got some errors about apparmor with the
older kernel.

Further to this - package installed updates this evening. X now
crashes immediately on bootup to black scree with unresponsive
mouse pointer. This is more severe - I can't Putty into the
account after the crash, which I could previously (before any
fixes applied)
