Hi, I'm a sufferer of the crash/freeze mentioned on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes, and have been happy to test the solution mentioned on that page.
The chipset: "00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)" The surrounding hardware: Toshiba Portege M300 laptop Using a Lucid install that I had not yet attempted any fixes on, the machine appeared to hang with a blank screen at the point when X attempted to start. After installing the legacy driver from the raof/aubergine PPA, and adding i915.modeset=0 to grub the same problem occurred. While leaving this driver installed, I changed i915.modeset to 1, and the X server booted without hassle. dpkg confirms the installed X driver as being: "xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.12.0+legacy20100802-0~raof1~lucid" Let me know if I can help further.
