Hi Jerome,
I'm moving this email thread to the Ubuntu GIS email list. (I assume all
CCed would already be on this list?)

Hello to all of you, it's really fun to see everyone interested in the
project.
I'm currently in my last week of University so I don't have a lot of
time, which explains the delay.
That's fine, feel free to continue this email thread in a week or so
when study has finished.
1. For the mailing list, maybe the UbuntuGIS mailing could be used?
Ok, now CCed.
2. Once again, I suppose the UbuntuGIS wiki could work?
Your call as to which wiki you wish to use. Once you start, I suggest
copying across any relevant material, and letting others know where it is.
Of particular note, I'm very much hoping that one of the outcomes for
this project will be guidelines for java packaging, which we will
include, or reference from our OSGeo-Live wiki.
3. I could start working on Java packaging earlier. I still want to
update UbuntuGIS first since it's been a while. Once it's done I could
start looking into Java while pushing things on Stable.
Lets discuss this with mentors and yourself once we officially start,
probably in an IRC session.
4. Daniel and me are in Chicoutimi, Québec so EDT. I remember from
last year that the OSGeoLive meeting was fitting for me.
OSGeo-Live meeting is currently at:

This will likely be a challenge for Ben in Perth, (who is a key person
to help with java packaging). Maybe slip the meeting timeslot to 1.5 hrs
later? Ben, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on timeslots that
you can make.
Once again, thank you for mentoring me!
You are welcome. Thanks for doing the work.

Congratulations Jerome on being selected to work on GSoC again.
And welcome to your mentors, all CCed, and listed here:
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Live_GIS_GSoC_2014#Mentors
(I've also CCed Hamish, who I understand doesn't have the time to
mentor this project, but I suspect would be able to be questioned in
a pinch?)
Jerome,
I suggest it would be a good idea to start working out house keeping
issues. In particular:
1. I assume we should work on a particular email list to archive our
conversations. They will likely be valuable to future packagers. I'd
be inclined to use the osgeo-live list, but am happy to suggest an
alternative list as the primary place to CC conversations. (This
email thread should be added to the list selected.
2. I expect it would be worth while having a central wiki or similar
where you collate your collective learning and document your
progress. I'd suggest building upon:
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Live_GIS_GSoC_2014
but am happy for you to suggest somewhere else. (Your project idea
should be linked from, or copied to this page)
3. I'd be keen to open up discussion about the goals for the project.
In particular, I feel the greatest need we have as an OSGeo community
is to remove the barriers around packaging java projects, which have
to date been difficult to get packaged. I'd like to see a greater
emphasis placed to researching, solving and documenting the java
packaging issues. And we are luckily enough to have one of the core
GeoTools/GeoServer developers as a mentor to help with this - Ben
Caradoc-Davies. How would you feel about starting on the java
packaging challenges earlier? If we could package geotools and
geoserver as part of this project, and have the process embedded into
the project's build process, I'd consider that as one of the greatest
successes of the time with GSoC.
4. It might be good to set up an IRC session, maybe as part of the
weekly OSGeo-Live meeting. However, selecting a time slot will likely
be challenging based on where we all live. I've added my location
(Sydney, Australia) to our listings at:
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Live_GIS_GSoC_2014#Mentors
I suggest others do the same, so we can see if there would be a time
slot that would suite everyone.

Hello all, and sorry for cross posting,
let us warmly welcome the 23 accepted students and their mentors for
this round of GSoC!

choosing wich ones to accept has been a difficult task, and we apologise
for not being able to take all the outstanding ones.
We accepted the following students (in software's alphabetical order):
* Cartaro: Naveen Panwar
* GDAL/OGR: Varun Saraf and Mikhail Gusev
* GeoNode: Vikas Mishra
* GRASS GIS: Vaclav Petras, Matej Krejci and Anna Petrasova
