I think if stable were to get 2.8.x - there needs to be a better explanation of stable vs unstable. I've spent more some time convincing fellow GIS people that unstable (which is usually stable) is what you want...and stable is out of date (but stable) software. I may be missing it but I don't see it explained anywhere clearly....to me it's clear if I look at it as a linux user - as a GIS practitioner it's not clear.

I like the way Ubuntu lines up with Debian - I'm just fighting the urge to switch to the QGIS repos. I'm on 2.8.1 on my main machine. I've not been notified that 2.10 is ready...I'm slightly concerned I've missed something where I need to update my repo for 2.10 or to get 2.8.2. I switched my laptop to 2.10 (qgis repos). I'm pretty sure 2.10 isn't ready on unstable and that's fine - I'm just getting worried I've missed something.

I would love to be able to have both 2.10 and 2.8.x installed - I'm pretty sure that would cause someone more headaches than I wish on anyone.

The grass breakages are a pain....but I'm hoping it gets better. I know it's a new release. The OSGEO4W release on windows always makes me a bit envious of that side of life.

Thanks for all you guys do,
Randy

Recent discussions/breaks in the QGIS/GRASS interactions via the QGIS

Seems based on our old ppa naming:
Stable should get QGIS 2.8.x LTR updates
and GRASS 6.x

Unstable should get QGIS 2.10+, GRASS 7+ (QGIS GRASS Plugin known to not
work until at least QGIS 2.12)

Of course this assumes people use stable/unstable in the manner we
suggest. I actually don't know anyone who actually uses stable, since it
mostly seems to have much older stuff.

This also seems relevant to Mapserver, where 6.x would move to stable
and 7.x could go in unstable. And GDAL 2 vs GDAL 1.x

A side variation I've heard suggested is that we alias package names
and files so that a transition allows both versions to be installed
(would be awesome for postgis migrations). But I think that adds too
much complication on the Debian side.

Any other suggestions or ideas on how to handle this so end users end
up with working versions. Current unstable leaves QGIS Processing
toolbox not working with any GRASS for some reason. Claims it can't find
GRASS (though GRASS launches fine directly).

Thanks,
Alex
