Richard A Bevis confirmed that the question is solved:
Awesome! You learn something new around here everyday. All the
"recommended for installation" were lettered in gray, and when I looked
through Synaptic I found them already installed. However, I found dia,
skencil, ruby, etc... in "suggested for installation" and there you
have it. This Ubuntu stuff, OS and community is fantastic. Thank you
