actionparsnip proposed the following answer:
you could just run:
sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia*; sudo apt-get --purge autoremove;
sudo apt-get clean; sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Then run:
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and set the driver to "nv" instead of "nvidia" to use the open driver
