lol, really Ubuntu needs 15Gb or more to have enough room unless you use
a separate partition for /home which would be a good idea but it's
probably easier to just do a standard install first time.

Just booting up from the cd and choosing the option "Try Ubuntu without making 
changes to this computer" should get you to a working desktop.  here's a guide
