Yes... it is absolutely possible that "Could the problem be related to
the fact that I downgraded back from ubuntu 9.04 to 8.04?"!!!
This makes an unchecked state. (sadly) All the applications are only
ready to go up in the versions. And normally only one version by one.
Never skip a version when upgrading! (Except LTS to next LTS... then you
can skip the versions between.)
