I tend to go with all non-free components but hope to go all OpenSource some
day. I've not had to pay anyone so far but if i find out that people in my
country should be paying then i'll try to pay up or move to OpenSource.
There's 2 trouble-shooting guides i can give, hopefully it's something
early in one of these although it sounds like you have a completely
different type of problem
