Karvagroth gave more information on the question:
The contents of /etc/hosts was:
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 karvagroth-home
I changed the second line to 192.168.1.111 and restarted the network
daemon. The hostname resolved, by still cannot ping.
