actionparsnip proposed the following answer:
have you ran:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
(if you use kde then the package name is kubuntu-restricted-extras and
for xubuntu it's xubuntu-restricted-extras)
You could also add the medibuntu repo and install w32codecs (if your
Ubuntu is 32bit) or w64codecs (for 64bit)
