Question #78303 on Ubuntu changed:
https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/78303

    Status: Open => Answered

actionparsnip proposed the following answer:
boot to recovery root console

run

nano /boot/grub/menu.lst

scroll to the bottom of the file where the kernels and boot options are
defined. You will need to delete the word 'quiet' fro the kernel to get
rid of the retarded boot screen so you can actually see what's going on.

You can also try booting to root recovery console then delete
/tmp/.clean with:

rm /tmp/.clean

then reboot
