actionparsnip proposed the following answer:
You can install kdm as this is the default activity, but its a huge
bloat for a very minor functionality gain. You will still log into your
chosen session type (Gnome, XFCE, LXDE, whatever)but you will have a
tonne of KDE stuff on your system to get KDM running.
I'm sure theres a more graceful way but i am unsure of it.
