Tom proposed the following answer:
Using a LiveCd go up to the top taskbar and click on
Applications - Accessories - Terminal
and type in
sudo grub
which should take you to the grub command-line rather than the normal
linux one you were just on. Onto the grub command-line type
find /boot/grub/stage1
(or paste it with the mouse. ^v doesn't work but mouse paste is always good)
and just giv us the results of that in here ;)
