gadolinio proposed the following answer: I'd recommend KMess instead of Pidgin. KMess is more similar to Windows Messenger, so you'll find it more comfortable to work with. Go to System-->administration--> synaptic package manager. (You'll be asked for you password, because you'll be about to install software). Search for "kmess", right click the result displaying that name, and click "mark for intallation".
