Musonda Chisha confirmed that the question is solved:
I tried the solution from actionparsip, but it did resolve the problem.
Unfortunately, due to pressure to work on urgent documents, I had to reinstall
my back up of Windows Vista OS.
What I have decided is to wait for the Ubuntu 9.04 CD which I ordered when the
problem just started, so that I do a proper installation. I might have caused
an error on the upgrades (I started from Ubuntu 7.10 through to 8.10).
However, I appreciate the efforts by ACTIONPARSNIP and TOM to help me.
