I've read the thread again...
You mentioned that you would like to drive it with a LCD-TFT but you are trying
by now with the HD-TV, right?
The problem might be that the TV is not giving a "nice" DPMS-signal so
that quite smart new Ubuntu is getting the wrong informations... though
not working correctly with manual tuning.
You should try (if you didn't yet) to use that 17" LCD. Might be it's getting
out a better signal so the graphics can understand and turn on in the right
manner.
Try it only with the LCD... don't connect them both please.
