Hi all,
my suggestion is to use dark themes by default in present and future
versions. I know there are dark versions already but not as default, ie.
last time I checked Ubuntu GNOME with GNOME 3.10 has a bright theme
(Files and all settings windows show bright) as main with a dark upper
panel.
The main reason for this are better readability and easiness on the
eyes, with which I'm sure most of you are familiar with, and to that
related reduction of eye strain bright themes cause, thus we could this
way also encourage users to use darker themes and show them the benefits.
We all spend extended periods of time in front of our PCs and our eyes
get tired after a time, especially when staring at a desktop with a
bright theme that acts literally as a light bulb.

thought, and that could also influence the direction future graphics
development of Ubuntu GNOME could take.
I e.g. am using Dorian-theme-3.12 on my desktop (currently Xfce, new
machine will be GNOME) and it works very well, focus is a lot better
because even letters in white and better seen on dark backgrounds. Also
the energy saving aspect is a great highlight.
