Short: I loaded the O.S. went to initiate deja dup and it was saying I needed to get duplicity 0.6.23 it recognized .22 in the process I went root deleted .22 and put in the zip file and unzipped .23 file I saw in place of the .22 duplicity. Deja dup still saw .22 nothing fixed but I had .22 restricted file in trash. Went root cleaned out trash and installed back in time recovery point maker. All hell broke loose and every time I rebooted certain things were reverted back to out of the box state. eg.. shell extensions etc...
solution: deleted the os and partition from win 8.1 and reinstalled UG. Every thing is fine then I shutdown UG and then try to log in. No luck. I find some posts on the subject: 1) wait to full boot and at log in hit: ctrl+alt+f1 log in on terminal and I see 5 packages need installing. run sudo apt-get dist-upgrade; sudo apt-get update. delete problematic ppa's and a program: google music manager beta. The dist-upgrade in post I read was supposed to fix the log in problem it did not. 2) I was running standard Ubuntu for a while with first uses of Linux and had trouble with things then switched to Mint 15-16. Then I installed un-supported Gnome in Mint 16. I had to add caja to startup menu to get it to load gnome and then when I had two "shells"? active. Never tried to close caja or see if I could fix it but some wine installation wrecked my repository access. So I found Ubuntu Gnome. I like it. Anyway) Remembering as I go along: Ubuntu experience with Gnome: When I loaded Gnome to Ubuntu sometimes I could not log into a session. in my case I could not log into Gnome. I logged into Gnome(Cairo Dock) works fine. Then into system default my ass brain where I want to be anyway. after Anyway) everything is fine now minus a user menu that will accept a hide panel toggle for bottom panel. Another even longer story) Bottom panel is gone don't know how I did it in terminal I un-installed shell extension maybe, I wanted to auto hide it to see full cairo dock? Also maybe after system monitor is out but, the gray hidden panel still is temperamental and I can't seem to initiate it on right click or left but it pops up every and and then. Final) Everything is fine I don't know about deja dup usage now and bottom panel is gone but I just wanted a universal shell extension to auto hide it.
