As a result of my insatiable curiosity I was experimenting with various login 
sessions; one of them being cairo-dock. The computer now begins the boot-up 
sequence as usual but get's 'stuck' right before the display should be showing 
the desktop. I can continue it by the ctrl-alt-F1 sequence and typing startx 
but would like to know which file needs editing to make the default session 
boot permanentley.

All my searches were fruitless as the old files such as desktop.session and 
lightdm.conf are either non-existent in 14.04 or have been replaced with 
something else.

Your guidance would be appreciated,
