Hello Tom!
Ubuntu GNOME, like all the other "flavors" of Ubuntu with different
desktop environments, is offered FREE OF CHARGE. You do not have to pay
any fees for using it. That includes upgrading. :D
The best way for someone like you to get a hold of the latest release of
Ubuntu GNOME is:
1. Download the ISO from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/GetUbuntuGNOME
2. Follow either set of instructions below.
*NOTE: If the **computer asks you to authenticate, enter the password
you use to log in to your computer.*
*If you have a DVD:
*a. Open Brasero.
b. Select "Burn Image."
c. Hit "Click here to select a disc image."
d. Browse to the ISO you downloaded.
e. Select the ISO file.
f. Select the correct disc tray (if applicable).
g. Hit "Create Image."
After some time the disc will be ready. If it ejects, push the DVD tray
back in carefully, then proceed with step 3 below.
*If you have a USB flash drive (pen drive):
NOTE: You must have a USB flash drive that is at least 4 GB or higher!
*a. Open the Startup Disk Creator application.
b. Select the ISO file in the window. If the ISO does not appear, hit
"Other..." and browse to it.
c. If your USB flash drive has data on it, you may wish to format it. If
this is the case, select "Erase disk."
*WARNING: This will destroy any data on your USB flash drive!
*d. Hit "Make Startup Disk." Your USB flash drive will fill itself with
the image. Proceed with step 3 below.
*
*3. Restart the computer. You should either see a man in a circle with a
keyboard (if this is the case, press any key now) or a menu with options.
4. Use up and down arrows to select "Try Ubuntu GNOME without
installing" and press ENTER.
5. After some time, the desktop will appear. When it does, hit the
Windows logo key (or the Ubuntu key on a System76 computer) and begin to
type the word "ubiquity."
6. When "Install Ubuntu GNOME 14.04.1 LTS" appears, click it.
7. The installer will begin. Follow the prompts until you see "This
computer has {list of operating systems} on it. What would you like to do?"
8. Select "Upgrade Ubuntu {old version number} to Ubuntu GNOME 14.04.1 LTS."
9. Continue to follow the prompts to install the latest version of
Ubuntu GNOME.
