I don't think the installer can handle moving your existing /home contained within /, to a seperate partition though, so you will need to do this manually first. I have pretty much always run with a separate /home partition and never had any problems re-installing etc. The only things to really watch out for is when sharing that /home partition between different distro's or versions in a dual-boot setup, where you can end up with conflicting configurations on your (shared) user account.
