This seems to be the culprit:

If so you should be able to upgrade in recovery mode.

I think recent 'cups' updates are breaking boot :^(

what has been updates? -> dpkg Log
Tried Recovery mode and checked syslog?

Remove "quiet splash" when in GRUB from the kernel parameters to see
what is going on at booting up ...
