I did test with both i386 and amd64 to be sure it wasn't arch specific.
Does it also happen with gnome3-staging ppa?
Yes, I started from scratch with only the gnome 3 ppa which was OK, but
then after adding gnome 3 staging I ended up with the garbled menu and
sticky pop-ups as shown previously.
I did notice this time that libmutter is removed, is that now
deprecated? Maybe in 3.14 it's simply incorporated into mutter???
