RE: Display manager and it's themes. Since Oneiric is changing from gdm to LightDM I think we'll have to take a "wait and see" position. From what I've read ldm is much easier to "theme" but I've yet to play with it at all.
I always preferred a fairly generic gdm theme (after gnome broke gdm easy theming) like Karmic's black background.
