Yesterday I installed gnome-shell-extensions-alternative-status-menu,
and today gnome-shell failed to run. Dropping into a virtual console and
running it allowed me to see the following output:
$ DISPLAY=:0 gnome-shell

gnome-shell start again. The only other extension I have installed is
gnome-shell-extensions-native-window-placement.
