you have to change the users and groups settings to allow local system
administrator to login through gui,, it's in the users and groups options,,
and tehn you can set the root password manually and login regulary

anyway,, try when you are in root mode through gui, not to install any
programs manually by compiling them, you should do this from your regular
user so the program settings work with your own user account but with root
priviliges
